Sex Therapy

Sex Therapy (adults 18+):

Sex therapy is a specialised form of talk therapy that supports individuals and couples in exploring their sexual wellbeing. Sex therapy encourages people to better understand and resolve sexual concerns through open dialogue, emotional insight, and practical tools. It can explore: (the following is meant to be bullet points)

• Sexual beliefs, values, and attitudes
• Emotional responses and relationship dynamics
• Patterns of sexual behaviour
• Experiences of pleasure, desire, arousal, and orgasm
• Specific tools to enhance sexual well-being

There is no physical touch between therapist and client or physical examination in sex therapy. All work is done through conversation, reflection, and personalised therapeutic techniques. Depending on the issue, sex therapy is often provided in conjunction with other health professionals such as psychologists, GPs, gynaecologists, and pelvic floor physiotherapists.

Individual Sex Therapy:

Individual sex therapy is ideal for singles struggling with:

Desire, arousal, or orgasm difficulties (including erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder, female orgasmic disorder, or female sexual interest/arousal disorder)
• Sexual insecurities or fears
• People preparing for romantic and sexually intimate relationships
• Healing from the trauma of sexual assault
• Any person (single or partnered) engaging in out-of-control sexual behaviours, such as compulsive pornography use, masturbation, or sexual activity (often termed “sex addiction”)

Generally, if sexual concerns arise within a relationship, it is strongly recommended that both partners participate in couples sex therapy.

Couples Sex Therapy:

Many sexual concerns are relational. Couples sex therapy focuses on the shared aspects of sexual connection and supports both partners in navigating:

• Mismatched sexual desire
• Difficulties with arousal or orgasm within the relationship (including erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder, female orgasmic disorder, or female sexual interest/arousal disorder)
• Fears or insecurities about sexual activity
• Challenges in sexual intimacy due to past sexual trauma
• Rebuilding sexual trust after infidelity or out-of-control sexual behaviour

Couples sex therapy also includes couples therapy, due to the significant overlap between couple dynamics and sexual dynamics.

In Mind Therapy’s sex therapist Justine welcomes a diversity of clients including those from the LGBTQIA+ community and religious communities. She does not specialise in working with paraphilic disorders or those who have a history of sexual offending.
